Are you like me, always looking to find simplicity and mindfulness in the daily chaos of life and always eager to create more healthier, daily habits?

During my ‘Touch Yoga’ classes, I often say, ‘Here’s another fabulous habit to sprinkle into your day!’ My wonderful yogis usually respond with a raised eyebrow or, more often, mumble a few choice words under their breath like, ‘Oh no, not another thing to add to the list!’ And honestly, I totally get it, sometimes I feel the same way!

But you can actually trick your mind to a healthier and better life..with this fabulous life hack that really works..

‘Habit stacking’ is a fabulous concept of pairing a new habit with a current habit, it tricks your mind into adopting a new habitual loop, so you don’t feel that initial overwhelm.

Our brains just love repetition, we all have habitual behaviour, and we follow what is called the ‘Habit Loop’.

Here’s how the ‘Habit Loop’ works:

The Trigger - or cue that starts the habitual behaviour.

The Routine - this is the physical, mental or emotional response.

The Reward – the prize telling your brain, this loop is worth remembering in the future.

Start with one small new habit, attach it to an existing habit and you will be surprised how quickly the brain adapts, without the feeling of overload. You can continue to micro stack more small healthier habits as you progress.

Here are a few examples of ‘Habit Stacking’:

• After you pour a cup of coffee in the morning, meditate for one minute.

• Before you get into bed, do one ‘Touch Yoga’ pose (I always have my yoga mat out , so I don’t even have to unravel it).

• Before you open the front door, to go to work or leave the house, pause take 5 deep, cleansing breaths.

Remember to focus on one or two new micro habits for a few months, don’t overwhelm yourself.

'People do not decide their futures, they decide their habits and their habits decide their futures.'

Wonderfully said by James Clear.
